The Laws Railroad Museum and Historic Site

Hidden in the small community of Laws just a short distance from Bishop California is one of the best museums I have ever been to.  I discovered the Laws Railroad Museum and Historic Site because of a billboard on the way into Bishop on a road trip. I love museums, so I made a mental note to check it out in the morning. The first train steamed into Laws in 1883 and the last one was parked there in 1960 and given to the city of Bishop and the county of Inyo as a gift deed.

The site consists of 14 acres crammed full of awesome historic relics and buildings from times long past.  The buildings were saved and moved here so that they wouldn’t be torn down.  Theres 45 displays including a general store, gas station, post office, gold mining equipment and tractors.  One of the first buildings I went into just out of the reception center was the “Photography” shop.  There are dozens of old cameras on display.

There are impressive Indian artifacts and bottle collections also.  The original train depot is still standing and open for you to look through.

Anyone who knows me also knows that I love rusty old stuff.  I was not disappointed in the least at this museum.  They have a huge display of old rusty farm equipment and tractors as well as an old blacksmith shop.  I’ve seen some HDR shot of messy old tool benches that looked pretty cool to me, so I gave it a try.  I like the texturs, lighting and detail that it shows. The spiderwebs are even visible.

I don’t know if this sign was original, but it made me laugh.
